Dean hadn't shown up.
In a desperate attempt to prove himself to the other men of the Winchester family, Sam had loaded up on his academic course load, as well as the activities after school. Even though he found himself constantly being the new student, he applied himself for however long he was at a certain high school. Soccer, debate team, and now in the little state of Michigan he had signed up for an academic decathlon. Normally, Dean was there rather early, but Sam was surprised to notice that his brother was not one of the first family members to attend. There was long moments of horror when Sam realized that he had not showed up at all.
Of course, after the first shaky few categories where he did not do as well as expected Sam finally decided to ignore the audience and focus on what he was supposed to focus on with rapid attention. Despite the victory for himself, he was not too happy with the end result of his brothers case. He didn't show. Frustrated and hurt, Sam stuck around to help clean up the gym before he left, in the hopes that Dean would pull up in the parking lot of the building with the Imapla.
John did not often come to school events, but Dean had showed up to every single one throughout Sam's academic career. There was a horrifying moment where Sam considered that Dean had just forgotten about him. After all, Sam was the only one of the Winchester trio who followed his heart sooner than his instincts, his head ruled his body, not the other way around. Dean and John shared a kinship, where all that Sam and John had ever accomplished was arguing over their clashing viewpoints.
After cleaning the gym of the chairs and the like, Sam grabbed his stuff from the metal locker and went to stand outside. They were living in the middle of Wisconsin, while John followed a case. It was freezing out there, even with the layers Sam was wearing, a plaid shirt underneath a thicker jacket the sub zero temperatures leaked into his bones through the open pores on his skin. At least with his taller height he was able to conserve more body height than most other people. Even though he was only a freshman in high school, he had hit the six foot mark early on. He still was the emotional one of the three, and even now he felt a little overwhelmed by the betrayal and hurt over Dean not showing up. Along with maybe, even some jealousy. Most older brothers could think of a million things better to do than to sit through their younger brothers school events, but Dean had always come. Had the time come when Dean decided he could forget about his little brother and move on with his life?
Of course, Sam did not need his older brother for anything than platonic care, and while Dean deserved his own life Sam did not want to be left alone in a world that he didn't fit into.

Sammy's gonna kill me.
It was that thought above all others which had been plaguing the older Winchester's mind - along with a mixture of worry about his younger brother's emotional state - ever since lunchtime when their dad had arrived out of the blue at his high school with a completely random excuse about him having some kind of appointment just so that he could pull him out for the rest of the day without looking like a horrible parent. Honestly, Dean had to admit that he'd been a little surprised to hear that John was in the office waiting for him to collect his things so that they could go. Sure, their lifestyle wasn't 'normal' by any means of the word but the Winchester patriarch had always held a very high value in both of his children's education - which had only served to put him further on edge. It only helped slightly that he knew John was having more than his fair share of issues where the case that had brought to this little town in the middle of nowhere that was Wisconsin. With Bobby a full two states away, he was the closest hunter who had any kind of experience and one thing he knew for sure was that their father would choose him to help over Sam any day.
Unfortunately for him, their father had decided to pull him out on what was probably the worst day ever. Having gotten used to being the family presence at his younger brother's school events since John couldn't ever seem to find the time to attend, Dean had taken to noting down all of the dates weeks in advance just so he could be sure that he wouldn't miss any of them. It was that more than anything else which had gotten him somewhat worked up at hearing that he was leaving school early. Knowing their father, he was seriously having issues with the unnamed evil that had brought them into town if he felt the need to bring in Dean and that probably meant he was going to be on research detail - which was basically hours spent surfing the internet in an attempt to figure out exactly what it was they were after. To put it simply, he had a feeling Sam was going to be on his own tonight. Unable to leave it alone, he'd even gone so far as to bring the point up to John but he'd gotten then was a lecture on how he needed to 'help out the family' instead of worrying about Sammy so much.
What little bit of conscience he possessed as a adolescent male full of hormones could only take so much worrying, however, and it was with the knowledge that John would be furious with what he'd done that Dean slipped out of the library - the keys to the Impala tucked safely in his pocket as he headed around back to the parking lot. If skipping out their father weren't enough, the idea that he had taken the car without permission in itself sent a chill of fear shooting up his spine but he knew that he'd made a promise to Sam that he wouldn't break if he could help it. Dad will get over it eventually, he told himself firmly - though he didn't believe it in the slightest - as he slid into the familiar leather that was the driver's seat of the family car. I just can't leave Sammy alone. Not today. I told him I'd be there and that's what I'm going to try to do. Unfortunately, today just wasn't his day though as one glance at the digital clock on the dashboard told him that the decathlon had ended just ten minutes earlier. Growling in irritation that he'd managed to lose track of time so easily, he hurriedly pulled out of the parking lot and headed towards the high school.
What only served to make matters worse was that the town that they'd chosen to inhabit for this hunt just had to build the library on one end of it while the high school was located on the other end. That, coupled with the fact that the local factory's workers were all getting off work only served to delay him for an extra fifteen minutes before he finally managed to pull into the school's parking lot and drove to the back of the building where he and Sam had decided the first day would be their meeting spot. The whole way there he let a string of curses which were directed only at himself flow freely through his head and the guilt which was now raging inside of him only became more pronounced when he noticed Sammy standing just off to one side of the gymnasium entrance. God, please don't let him think I abandoned him, Dean thought as he honked the horn twice to catch his brother's attention before pulling up into one of the vacant spaces and cutting off the engine. Not bothering to remove the keys from the ignition he got out and slammed the car door behind him as he headed up to where his brother was. "God Sammy...I'm so sorry. Please, let me explain."
