After defeating Dick Roman with the help of Meg, Sam, Dean, Castiel and others, Dean and Castiel were flung into purgatory. Once in purgatory, Dean and Castiel look at one another and Castiel tells Dean to run as fearing eyes eye Dean from the vast areas of the forest of purgatory. Castiel then regained his sanity back in purgatory, no more chasing the bees, speaking forgiveness with board games or being insulted easily. Castiel is back to being his normal self, however normal that one could be and is looking for a way out of purgatory. It seemed Dean Winchester had escaped and a demon named Benny took a ride with him. Only humans can walk through the gate of purgatory, so Castiel had to find another way.
Once out of purgatory by the help of fellow angels, Castiel is out to get reinforcements, one from the far future. Sage Winchester is a skilled hunter and great x 6 granddaughter of Dean Winchester. Castiel talks Sage into coming back into the past in order to help her descendants fight the war before them. Once out, he hears that the Leviathans are out to open the gates of hell and what is needed is not only Sam's blood, but it is discovered that a female in a town named Mystic Falls Virginia also has the blood that can open hell itself. Castiel has known this and even know she has an older brother that she does not even know about who is searching for her. With their blood combined, they are the key to opening hell.
Castiel's misson now is to protect Elena Gilbert from the Leviathans who are trying to take her for their own benefit. Also Sam Winchester, Elena's older long lost brother, Katherine Pierce are also ones he needs to protect, since they are all in the Petrova bloodline and are able to open the gates of hell, the need to be protected.
