It was that time of the year again; the time when hairless apes thought spending time with family and friends was more important than spending time with a complete stranger. It was that time of the year when Balthazar found himself with almost nothing to do. Oh, yes, there were always those few souls out there who had no friends or family to speak of but those souls were the humans that Balthazar always avoided, no matter what time of the year it was. He was afraid that if he gave them any attention, they might get clingy with him.
It was the humans that were fine with only one night of drinking (and usually other things) with him and then never seeing him again because they were social butterflies that this angel liked to be around. And those were the very hairless apes that he couldn't be around because they were too busy celebrating the holiday season. So what was an angel like him to do at a time like this?
There had been something that Balthazar had been pondering for many weeks now. He had told Cas that he would think about helping him out against the Leviathans, and think about it he had. If he had to die again, then why not let it be because he was helping an old friend fight the Leviathans than because he had stayed out if it all, the Leviathans had succeeded in releasing Luci, and Luci had decided (as no doubt he would) to kill off all of the angels who had never stood by his side in the past? He could die a somewhat heroic death or go out a coward. It wasn't a hard choice, was it?
A simple tracking spell had led him to the small town of Mystic Falls, Virginia. After only a few days in the town, Balthazar knew why Cas was here. This place was crawling with all sorts of supernatural activity. It had to be related to the Leviathans somehow, and chances were great that Cas' buddies, Dean and Sam, were lurking about the town too. But Balthazar had yet to get in touch with Cas. He wanted to think about his decision for another day or two at least. He didn't want to rush into anything because the Leviathans were...Well, they were the Leviathans. God's first creations. They were more powerful than the most powerful angels.
Tonight, he was going to party, if a holiday celebration in such a small town could ever be called a real party. He arrived at the Town Square, immediately standing out in that everyone else was bundled up in coats and scarves, while the angel was in his usual outfit, not being affected by the cold, like humans were. There was a cafe nearby open, the scent of food wafting out of it, a refuge for the humans to retreat to when the cold was too much for them.
Balthazar stepped into that safe haven and a smile crossed his face as he saw that more than just food was set up in here. He headed over to the table that had caught his interest and poured himself a glass of scotch. Then, he leaned up against the nearby wall and observed everyone inside with him. This was the type of small town where everyone seemed to know everybody else. But at least so far none of them seemed willing to invite a stranger into their close-knit community. He just might decide to fly out of here after a few more free drinks.
