The night was clear and the air was very still. It was actually a nice night but it was risky for her to be out like this. Her eyes continued to move around and sensitive ears strained to hear even the slightest sound. The secret that she had been keeping for the last year had been let out by Alaric. Now it was only a matter of time before the town's founding families acted. It didn't matter at the moment. Caroline just had to get out of the house; had to be outside. The girl had been so cooped up for what seemed like forever, for her 'protection'. The councill knew and it would only be a matter of time before they came after her and Tyler.
Despite the fact that she needed to keep a low profile, Miss Mystic Falls couldn’t be expected to do nothing. There were still events to for the planning committee. Too many questions would be raised if she sat this event out. Attention was not what the now outted vampire needed. She and Tyler had both been told to the counsel; about what they really were. It was dangerous for everyone around them. However, appearances had to be maintained for as long as possible. If she just up and disappeared, then they would know she was hiding something. Her mother and Mayor Lockwood were doing everything they could for their children.
The forest was the best place for her to go for the moment. Unless someone was out looking for her, they wouldn't find her. She hadn't taken her car, as she slipped out of the house while her mother was in the shower. Elizabeth was in a panic trying to make sure that the other founders did not come after her daughter. Of course she didn't blame her mother. A phantom ache made her flex her hand at the memory of the pencils impaling her palms and she shuddered at the thought of the vervain soaked gag. The once good teacher and friend really had lost it. Thankfully Bonnie had managed to help curb in his 'inner demon', keeping that dark side of him in check. When Alaric was like that, he had made Klaus look like a kitten.
Klaus wasn't a person that the young vampire wanted to think about lately. He lied to her, betrayed her. He'd been inside her boyfriend's body? She told him things; shared things that she never did with anyone else...she kissed him for Heaven's sake. By all rights she should hate him. She just wanted to not think about him. She sighed again finally stopping her run and stopping by a tree. Images and thoughts of everything was swimming around in her mind. Moving just a bit further, but at a slower pace. Caroline looked at the ruins of Fell's Church. A tree lay fallen near some of the stones. The blonde sat down with a huff.

The afternoon sky was a mix of clouds and sun. The white wispy puffs floated across the sky. In the woods outside the town of Mystic Falls, beams of sunlight pierced the green canopy. The dirt ground was bustled about by the footsteps of Caroline Forbes. She was her typical teenage drama queen. Granted, her concerns were more legitimate than a normal teenager. But still, Caroline had a certain talent for intensifying the drama.
As she sat down in the ruins of Fell's Church, a man approached. He was fairly tall with dark hair. He was dressed in a fine black suit and jacket with matching pants. It was none other than Elijah Mikaelson. He was walking in the woods trying to enjoy that he was back in Mystic Falls and near Elena again.
Yet he knew that most of her friends didn't trust him. He was an Original and the brother of Klaus. He was understanding considering what Klaus had done to them. But he needed to show them that he wasn't his brother. Elijah would do what he had to make sure Klaus wasn't killed, but otherwise he would try to get along with Elena's friends.
And there was no better start than Caroline. Elijah's encounters with her had been next to nonexistent. Frankly he hadn't had time to spend much time talking to her. Keeping them from killing Klaus was a job in itself. But now that Klaus had his army of hybrids, the danger to him was lessened. Not that Elijah wouldn't keep his eye out.
Elijah approached Caroline who had sat in a huff. It was rather amusing in a way. The drama queen had become a vampire. And was made a better person for it. It gave him hope in a way. Vampires weren't doomed to being monsters if they could learn the control Caroline had. If Elijah could get her to be accepting of him, then perhaps the others would fall in place.
"Surely your troubles couldn't be all that bad."

Her fingers moved along the bark of the tree that she sat on. The rough bark scratched at her fingers. It served as a mild distraction for the thoughts that swam around in her head. A distraction was what she wanted but that didn’t mean that was what she needed. Choices had to be made. Decisions that could ruin friendships and change lives. That giant jerk Klaus was weaseling his way under her skin. Making it harder each day to pull away from him. There was just something about him that seemed to draw her to him. Three times he had saved her life…and three times she had been used as a distraction. To her own surprise, he seemed more amused by her deception than angered by it and still he chased after her.
Tyler also lingered on her mind. The two had been at odds for the last few days, leading up to him disappearing. They had argued and fought before the hybrid had taken off, leaving Caroline standing alone. Still the vampire was angry at Tyler, but she missed him as well. She took his abuse for the most part…and the jealously. She even amused there had been something between him and that Hailey werewolf but she did not say anything about it. In typical Caroline fashion, she had been pushed aside. Only when she spoke up again being the second choice had the male told her she was being stupid and that he loved her. Sure, he could say the words all he wanted but his actions spoke volumes.
So many thoughts swam in her mind, consuming her attention. His footsteps had been silent and she had been so focused on the turmoil in her mind, to notice that a very dangerous man was closing in. A wisp of black caught her eye. Flax colored hair moved as her head rose to see the source of color. Soft blue eyes traveled up the expensive shoes and the expertly tailored suit. There was no need to even look at the man’s face to know who was standing before her. As their gaze met, she spoke softly. “Elijah.”
Staring slightly wide eyed for a moment, Caroline stood up from her spot on the fallen log. Why was he here? When did he get back into town? If he was in Mystic Falls, were the other originals back? So many questions were written on her face but fear crept in the back of her mind. Elijah was dangerous. He made her far more uncomfortable than his brother Klaus could ever do. “What are you doing here?” Her tone suggested more curiosity than a fear however due to his comment. Giving a soft scoff her eyes rolled. “You have no idea.”

Elijah's sudden arrival had slightly startled Caroline. She was so lost in her own thoughts that she wasn't paying attention to her surroundings. Even with her own enhanced vampire senses. Caroline recognized him though. Even without any formal introductions, she had seen him before. His influence in their lives had been fairly big over the past few months. It made sense he supposed.
Caroline stood up with a clear questioning glance on her face. She was undoubtedly trying to figure out why and when he had returned. Caroline may look like a typical airhead blonde, but she was more than that. Even she was intelligent in her own way. Elijah walked in front of her with a small smirk.
"Ah don't act so surprised Caroline. After all, how long did you think that Niklaus's revival would go unnoticed? Family is everything to me you know. But don't worry. I am not mad at you or any of your little friends. I'm sure Nikalus strong armed your little witch into keeping him alive. You so desperately wanted him dead after all. But I'd like to make amends for the role I've played in all of this."
Elijah had slowly walked closer to her as he spoke. The same small smile had remained on his face the entire time. His pace was casual and nonchalant. He was completely at ease. There was no threat of attack or anything like that from him. He finished talking by winding up directly in front of her. Elijah then extended his hand to her open palm.
"Allow me to introduce myself properly. We've never had a proper greeting. I am Elijah Mikaelson."
Caroline would probably recognize the greeting from Klaus. It was the type of greeting those would use when they kissed the hand of the woman. As was proper long ago.

Why was he here? Caroline looked over at him curiously. She didn’t know much about the original but doubted he was simply out for a stroll in the middle of the woods. Even more so, why was he back in Mystic Falls? The blonde vampire’s face was serious as she thought for a moment and listened to the eldest of the Mikaelson’s speak to her. Of course she was cautious around him, not having the same level of safety that she had with Klaus. Elijah was not obsessed with her and his anger could easily be focused on her if she acted too rudely. That still didn’t mean she was going to show fear. Just because he managed to get a one up on her by sneaking up on her, didn’t mean that she would be meek with him. Original or not. “Why are you back in Mystic Falls?” Quickly she asked him, refusing to show that he did make her nervous. Her feet lead her one stride closer to him.
The differences between the two brothers were uncanny. There was no denying that they both took different paths in life. Their personalities were so very opposite. Even their appearances were varied. While Klaus was lean, with dirty blonde hair and light eyes. Elijah was broader and tall. His dark eyes had a hard coolness and the serious expression that seemed to be permanent on his face. While the differences were very clear, the similarities were a little harder to see. Caroline was quite intuitive and more observant than often given credit for. Loneliness. Both men seemed lonely, actually that seemed to be a trait that she noticed all the originals had. Klaus, Elijah and Rebekah were the only ones she had a chance to meet or at least heard about. Each one seemed to be longing for some companionship in varying degrees. Elijah might have hid it better than his younger brother and sister but it still seemed to be there. Perhaps that was the reason why the elder vampire was standing her talking to her.
She listened quietly, making a note of the small smirk on his lips as he spoke to her. “Klaus is a drama queen.” The blonde’s eyes rolled. “Of course he would end up attracting your attention.” Her arms crossed as she spoke, realizing that she should have known that with Klaus still in town, Elijah would not be far behind. “Mad at us?” Her eyes widened just a bit in annoyance. “You wanted him dead at one point too.” Uncrossing her arms as he drew closer, palms resting on her hips. Care had been so pissed at Bonnie for putting Klaus in Tyler’s body. To the point of not talking to her for weeks. Her friend allowed the person they were all suppose to hate, take over her boyfriend’s body. She kissed him for God’s sake! Kissed him and…liked it. “Can we just change the topic from your stupid brother?”
Change it he did. Only a small gap remained between the two as he extended his hand to her. He was giving her a real introduction. Her brow raised as soft eyes looked at his hand. Ever trusting, Caroline extended her hand, thinking that he was only going to shake it. The gentle kiss surprised her. So very well mannered but manners from like a million years ago. “Caroline Forbes.” She returned the greeting though she was sure he knew exactly who she was.

Elijah watched the infinitely younger vampire's reaction. It seemed her alarm had been replaced by curiosity. Once she had determined he wasn't going to snap her neck or something like that, she wanted to know as to his purpose. Even so, an air of caution remained about her. Caroline wasn't a complete airhead. then. She knew better than to fully trust him. All in all, Elijah found it all rather amusing. She was like a small cat trying to size up a lion. She would perhaps see the small dance of amusement in his eyes. Caroline then came flat out and asked him why he had come.
"Why? It's simple. I want to be with my family. As you stay here to be with yours. As much as Nikalus as done, he is still my brother. And throughout the centuries he has been the only constant in a changing world. You'll come to appreciate that if you live as long as I."
All while he spoke, she walked slightly closer to him. Elijah's eyes maintained a sharp focus on her. He answered with a light air but she could still notice that he was keeping track of everything happening. Her movements, the sound of the wind rustling branches, the soft crunch of leaves underneath the feet of the woodland animals. Everything.
After he spoke, she responded to his remarks about Klaus. Part of her seemed extremely annoyed at mentioning him. Yet it wasn't the annoyance that was out of place. It was her almost... nonchalance about it. Or rather her lack of fear. It was as though she had no longer considered Klaus a threat. That was interesting. Had Klaus stopped his war on the denizens of Mystic Falls? She then brought up his former death wish for Klaus.
"My younger brother has always had a flair for the dramatics. It's part of his attention seeking problem I think. But like I said, he is my brother. At one point I thought he deserved death for betraying the rest of us. Staking us like his pets. But true death is eternal. For all the harm he has caused, I don't want to lose him for the rest of eternity. Forever is a long time you understand."
Elijah's slightly sarcastic remark was aimed at lightening any tension she still had. He wanted her to trust him. If Caroline's trust was earned then perhaps the others could also lighten to his return. However Carline tired of the topic of Klaus. Elijah sensed there was almost some emotional tension she had concerning his brother. Unrelated to his string of murders and power playing in Mystic Falls. She allowed him to greet her in the traditional manner however. Caroline was slightly bemused by it.
"It is lovely to meet you properly. And I mean what I say. I don't want you or anyone else in this town to think of me as a threat to you. I know I have done things in the past that would put that into question. But I assure you, as long as no moves are made towards me and my family, then I will try to make sure Niklaus doesn't try to harm any of you."
Elijah didn't say that as a deal or anything though. He was saying from a sincere part of his being. Elijah did not wish to see anyone in the town harmed or killed unnecessarily. He would do his best to maintain the peace between the Originals and Mystic Falls natives. Though technically the Originals were Mystic Falls natives. But that was another matter entirely.
