Despite the fact that Dean viewed the Impala as the baby he would more than likely never have considering that his lifestyle choice was that of a hunter, there was only so much time he was willing to spend locked inside driving around the country. When it had been just him in the car he was a little more willing to spend days on end behind the wheel as he tracked hunts wherever they might take him but with Sam it was different. Anyone with a pair of eyes could see that he loved his brother beyond all elese - more than was probably healthy even considering he'd made a demon deal to bring him back to life - but even siblings as close as they were needed time apart from one another every once in a while and driving back and forth across the country to kill monsters did make that kind of hard at times. Unless they wanted to be at each other's throats, separation was something of a requirement; even if only for short periods of time.
That being said, he hadn't wasted a moment in telling Sam to help him pack up what little they owned the minute that one of their dad's old friends who also happened to be a hunter had called him to say that rumors seemed to be sprouting up everywhere that Cas had been sighted in a small town by the name of Mystic Falls somewhere in the state of Virginia. Not bothering to offer any kind of explanation right then, he'd shoved everything into the trunk without a single care as to whether or not anything had been damaged and they were on the road again in record time. Though he hadn't told his brother everything about his final moments in Purgatory before the space warp had closed and he'd found himself on Earth again, Dean remembered each and every second as if it had happened only yesterday. It was his fault that Castiel hadn't made it out when he had - something he would never forgive himself for.
If only I'd been able to hold on tighter, he would have made it through too. I just don't understand why he didn't try harder. It was almost like he gave up, but why? It was that question more than any other which had been on Dean's mind almost constantly since he'd escaped. Cas had been right there, mere seconds away from freedom, and it had been as though the angel had suddenly lost all will to continue fighting for what he'd believed that they had both wanted. "Damn it Cas!" he growled suddenly, the anger bursting forth for a split second as he pounded the steering wheel with one closed fist as he had to use the other to make sure the car didn't veer off the highway. Suddenly remembering he wasn't alone, Dean glanced over at first Sam's sleeping form in the passenger seat and then the clock on the dashboard which informed him that they'd been on the road for over ten hours already. Releasing a sigh, he glanced at the map on which Sam had drawn out their route before focusing back on the road.
